Multi-seller marketplace for 3D model and texture downloads
For a seller of 3D models and game assets, we turned our multi-seller extension into a digital-download marketplace with seller uploads and approval, product bundles, large-file uploads, a gallery and news section.
Results
- Seller pack uploads with admin approval, commission per sale and customer downloads delivered on our multi-seller extension
- Client confirmed the FTP upload fix and that the gallery and news section worked well (June 2013)
- Product bundles, an upload progress bar and an admin order view added
- Store rebranded throughout under the client's new name; issues reported resolved at the end of 2013 ahead of a planned launch
The challenge
A publisher of 3D models, textures and game assets wanted to open its online shop to outside creators. Independent sellers would upload their own model packs, the store owner would approve them, a commission would be taken on each sale, and buyers would download the files after checkout.
The client had already bought our OpenCart multi-seller extension and had a new design ready. The extension handled sellers, products and commission, but digital asset sales bring their own needs: very large files that are awkward to upload through a browser, packs sold together as bundles, and clean-up of stored files when a product is removed. The client asked us to install everything and adapt it to the way their business worked.
What we did
- Installation and design. We installed the store and our multi-seller extension and adapted the client's own design to the storefront and product pages.
- Seller uploads and approval. Sellers upload model packs, which the store owner reviews and approves before they go on sale. We added seller-side download and approval controls, fixed uploads over FTP for large files, and made sure files are deleted when a product is removed.
- Product bundles. A custom bundle feature with its own bundle categories, automatic cart refresh and auto-filled bundle descriptions built from the included packs.
- Upload progress bar. A dedicated extension shows progress while sellers upload large asset files.
- Gallery and news. A gallery and news section for showcasing work and announcements.
- Admin order view. An order view in the back office to give the store owner a clear picture of marketplace sales.
- Rebranding. When the business adopted a new name, we replaced the old brand throughout the store.
- Testing and fixes. We worked through several rounds of client testing, fixing issues with approvals, seller downloads, mobile navigation and how the main download file was stored.
