Multi-college e-portfolio LMS with tutor marking and quality assurance
A multi-tenant learning platform for an education provider serving colleges, with flipbook courses, assessments, tutor marking and resubmissions, internal and external quality-assurance access and reporting.
Results
- Each point of the agency's specification reviewed and confirmed feasible before build (Nov 2022)
- Multi-college platform with college, tutor, student and IQA dashboards, marking and reports built and in client testing (Nov 2024)
The challenge
A UK web design agency had an education client that supplies learning books and course materials to colleges. The client wanted to move beyond static materials to an online e-portfolio: learners would read flipbook courses, complete assessments for each module, and build up evidence that tutors could mark and quality assurers could review.
The requirements went well beyond a standard learning plugin. Tutors needed to mark work and request resubmissions with a full history kept. Internal and external quality assurers (IQA and EQA) needed controlled access to moderate marking. Administrators needed reports. Most demanding of all, the platform had to serve several colleges, up to six, from one installation, each with its own logins, users and file library.
What we did
- Specification review. We went through the agency's specification point by point, confirming how each requirement, from dashboard blocks to reports, would be implemented before the build began.
- Tutor marking and resubmission. We customised Tutor LMS so tutors can mark learners' submissions, request resubmissions and keep a complete history of each attempt.
- Quality-assurance workflow. We added IQA moderation and access for quality assurers to review tutor marking, alongside demographic fields on student records to support reporting.
- Multi-college tenancy. We built the platform so each college has its own logins and users, and gave administrators, colleges, tutors, students and IQAs dashboards suited to their role.
- Reporting. We developed the admin reports set out in the specification.
The platform runs on WordPress with Tutor LMS, extended with custom development, on Plesk hosting.
