Live race schedules, points and results modules for a speedway website
For a US web agency, we built installable Joomla modules that pull race schedules, points standings and results from a motorsport data API onto a speedway's website.
Results
- Three installable Joomla modules delivered: events/schedule, points and results
- Feedback from the agency's team worked through on a demo site in early October 2017
- Agency said the modules were looking good and asked for live installation ahead of an upcoming event
The challenge
A US web agency manages the Joomla website of a speedway in the United States. Race fans visit the site to check the event schedule, follow the points standings and see results after each race night.
The speedway's race data was already held in MyRacePass, a motorsport management service with an API. The agency wanted the website to display that data automatically, in a form its own team could install and manage like any other part of the site, and it needed the work ready before an upcoming event.
What we did
- Events and schedule module. We built an installable Joomla module that reads the speedway's upcoming events from the API and presents them as a race schedule, including the series schedules held in the same service.
- Points module. A second module shows the points standings, with a scroller and a dropdown so visitors can switch between groups.
- Results module. A third module lists race results by date, so fans can look back at any race night.
- Menu pages. We created the menu items and pages for schedules, points and results so the new content slotted into the existing site navigation.
- Review and iteration. We set the modules up on a demo site for the agency's team to review, then worked through their feedback on the events, points and results displays before live installation.
Because the modules are standard installable Joomla extensions talking to the API, the agency can install, configure and position them itself, and the pages draw their content from the race management service rather than from manual edits.
