Ordering rules and a featured-products module for restaurant delivery sites

For a French web reseller, we added minimum-order rules, a pickup discount, VAT-aware coupons and a custom featured-products module to restaurant delivery and takeaway ordering sites.

Results

  • Custom products module with add-to-cart built, uploaded and reused on a second ordering site
  • Minimum-order alert, pickup discount without minimum, and coupons calculated on a VAT-exclusive or VAT-inclusive basis delivered
  • Reseller confirmed all requested points were done
  • Files documented for migration from staging to production

The challenge

A French web reseller was building online ordering sites for restaurant clients offering home delivery and takeaway. The first site was being prepared on a staging server ahead of moving to its production domain, and a second delivery-ordering site was being set up on the same foundation.

Food ordering has rules that a standard online store does not handle well. Delivery orders needed a minimum basket value with a clear alert when it wasn't met, while collection orders should skip the minimum and earn a discount. The terms and conditions had to be easy to view during ordering, coupons needed to work on either a VAT-exclusive or VAT-inclusive basis, and option prices had to show in the cart and at checkout. The reseller also wanted selected dishes promoted in specific positions on the page, with a direct add-to-cart button.

What we did

  • Minimum order and terms. A minimum-order rule with an alert for delivery orders, and the terms and conditions displayed in a pop-up.
  • Pickup discount. We configured pickup-from-store so collection orders receive a discount and are not subject to the minimum order.
  • VAT-aware coupons and option pricing. Coupons can be set to apply on a VAT-exclusive or VAT-inclusive basis, and option prices now appear in the cart and checkout.
  • Custom products module. A module that places selected products in chosen positions on the page, including the cart, each with its own add-to-cart button. We then reused it on the second ordering site.
  • Multistore and defaults. Automatic store assignment across the multistore setup, a default delivery region, option defaults and a cookie notice.
  • Fixes and handover. We cleared geo-IP notices at checkout and documented the changed files for migration to production.
